Housing

From 2017 to 2020, the cost of renting a two-bedroom apartment in Rockland jumped from $994 a month to $1,520.

Last year, it reached $2,200.

Most in our community recognize that our current housing situation is no longer sustainable. However, there is little action happening locally or regionally to supply any immediate policy relief to the individuals and families facing the prospect of losing their home or apartment today, this week or next month.

Are you upset about our housing situation and want to see something done about it?

No single policy solution will solve the housing crisis—which is why it’s imperative that we use all of the tools we have to provide effective relief now.

Rockland voters have shown that we will vote for policy to help working families, like our 2020 minimum wage law that passed by an overwhelming margin. In Portland, voters have enacted rent stabilization and tenant protections via referendum, and other Maine cities are considering related measures. We feel that the time may be right to place referendum questions on the November ballot to try to mitigate our undeniable housing crisis.

A first step is to organizing a housing campaign is to find out what policy you would like to be able to vote on.
We’ve created a survey to HEAR FROM YOU:

What change would you like to see?

What are you experiencing now—as a homeowner or renter?
