Rockland Community
Farm Project

The Rockland Community Farm Project was started with two main goals in mind:

  1. In response to impending climate impact on our food security, to rapidly increase growth of local produce through support of community growing projects, backyard gardens, local farms and the local food economy.

  2. To facilitate connection and communication between existing growing projects in order to better share resources (ensuring efforts are complimentary, not competing) and to provide a network of support to ensure all projects are vibrant, resilient and have longevity through strong longterm leadership and steady volunteer and financial support.

MacDougal
Community Garden

Partnering with the City of Rockland, Renew Rockland developed a small, demonstration garden in the newly formed MacDougal Garden in 2017.

Thanks to an enthusiastic group of volunteers and community support, the garden has developed into a beautiful example of publicly located edible landscaping.

During its first year, this project was able to grow and donate more than 500 lbs of produce to the AIO Food Bank. A motivating drive behind this project, for many of the volunteers, is to be able to connect those in our community who are food insecure with the healthy and fresh produce. In addition, an effort to provide a space where children and youth may learn more about food and gardening is an ongoing project goal.

South School Community Garden

Partnering with RSU13, Renew Rockland works to assist the faculty in their leadership and stewardship of this garden space, located at our elementary school.

The South School Community Garden is run by a handful of dedicated faculty volunteers at RSU 13’s South School, Rockland’s regional elementary school. This project has seen transition between leadership and is a prime example of locations that Renew Rockland hopes to assist through the Rockland Community Farm project.

In 2018, using our network, we were able to connect a donation of materials and time, to build brand new raised beds at this location. We also combined volunteer efforts for the kick-off of cleaning up and rebuilding of the space.

In this coming year, summer of 2020, we are keenly aware that with school out, this space has potential to be utilized but will need focus and volunteer-power to help faculty and families plant and maintain the garden through the summer months.
